Learning to behave in public should be part of any good dog training program. These three took a field trip to the park to work on their good manners in public. As dog owners it is important we recognize how to meet our dog's needs each day. The popular TV trainer, Cesar Millan describes a dog's needs as; exercise, discipline and affection (and in that order) We tend to agree with this basic philosophy and understand that having a well mannered companion depends on keeping those things in balance in a dog's life. The challenge for most pet owners is finding the time to adequately exercise the dog, practice a little obedience and then snuggle on the couch. Let's face it, life seems to be continuously busier and busier now days. The "to do" list is forever long and by the time our day ends....the only part many of us do consistently is the "on the couch" part! :-) Here at That's My Dog! we wanted to help Dubuque and Tri-State dog lovers by offering a Doggie Day School program. So today was our first day and the five students that attended day one, played with each other and with our pack of 4, PLUS they learned there is a time and place to "chill out" on their mat, they went for individual walks and practiced the discipline of having to "heel". They also worked on sitting politely and waiting their turn when we handed out snacks! We played fetch, a couple started to learn how to treadmill and we introduced "the egg" a very fascinating toy that seems impossible to catch! There was plenty of time to romp in the sun or to catch a nap in the shade and all in all it was a great day of dog obedience, learning and entertainment. We are looking forward to watching this program grow and being able to help more dogs become balanced and less reactive around others. Thanks everyone who came to our Grand Opening Celebration of our new Dubuque Dog Training center on Saturday. It was wonderful to see current clients, clients from many years back and meet new faces. We had a great time and hope that your dog enjoyed the visit. Congratulations to our Bobbing For HotDogs Champion, Emma (seen below in perfect form!) Emma managed to snarf 23 tidbits from the bottom of the pool in 60 seconds! The competition was stiff though, with Maggie the bodacious Beagle coming in second with 19 pieces. We had a tie for 3rd between Bella (lab mix) and Jersey (GSD) both coming up with 16 hotdog tidbits gobbled. dog training dubuque I also want to thank Bernie from the Dubuque Fighting Saints for joining us and for being a good sport in allowing us to let the dogs sniff and investigate the strange and larger than life St. Bernard. We have opened our doors at our new location at 5110 Wolff Rd. Dubuque, Iowa. We still have some finishing touches to make but All current lessons and classes are taking place at our new dog training facility. Our new local number is 563-588-3039 This expanded location gives us more room to better serve everyone. We will be offering new services in the near future. Look for more retail selection on the best training tools and toys, additional classes and coming this fall, our brand new doggy day school program. This day school option will meet the needs of those who wish to have day care for their dog, but are looking for a more specialized service that includes structure and learning in the environment as well.
